I have loved music from day one, but there is something about Ukrainian music
which I love more than any other genre. Since I can remember Uki music was
always playing in my house, mainly due to my dad and his endless uki tape
collection.
I've always had a musical ear, and have dabbled in various instruments including
guitar and accordion. After having a handful of guitar lessons and not getting
very far, I found myself preferring to teach myself. I started teaching myself
the drums when I was about 16, on a small crappy kit, playing for the Uki dancers
at the Ukrainian club once a week and soon picked up the basics of uki beats and
tempos.
After about a year I'd saved up enough money and bought my own drum kit, much to the
dismay of my parents!
The start of the band gave me an opportunity to fulfil a dream of being in an Uki band,
after years of inspiration by bands such as the Black Sea Cossacks, Chervona Kalyna,
Burya and Cheremshina, and also allowed me to express my passion for Ukrainian music,
through an instrument which I love.
Being in Chorna Roza has done nothing but, and keeps helping me develop as a drummer.
Each time we play I try something new, and I owe a lot of credit to the rest of the
guys for their inspiration! I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to share
my passion for Ukrainian music with four amazing friends who have the same passion
and are amazing musicians. Whether it's doing a gig or discussing how to start a
song, I love every minute!
